How to use this calculator
  1. Split L-shaped rooms into non-overlapping rectangles or enter a known area. Do not count intersections twice.
  2. Use Flooring packs for printed package coverage, including tile sold by stated box area. Use Tile boxes only when face dimensions × piece count are appropriate.
  3. Check the allowance and package capacity left. Neither area savings nor spare capacity guarantees that cuts will fit.

An area estimate with explicit package rounding

Measure each room as a non-overlapping rectangle, deduct excluded floor areas, and choose either flooring packs or tile boxes. Flooring mode uses the coverage printed on a pack. Tile mode derives nominal box coverage from tile dimensions and the number of tiles in a box.

The allowance is an area percentage selected by you. It is not a cutting optimizer and does not depend automatically on the laying pattern. Rooms using the same exact product can contribute to a consolidated quantity; incompatible dimensions or product descriptions prevent grouping.

Understand the inputs

Flooring packs / tile boxes
Select the format that matches your product. Tile dimensions describe its face; grout coverage is not subtracted from the room.
Tile dimensions and pieces
Use consistent units and the actual count per box. A larger nominal tile can differ from its manufactured face dimensions.
Excluded area
Only deduct surfaces that truly do not receive this material. Do not subtract a movable piece of furniture automatically.
Allowance
Account explicitly for the area margin you choose. The tool does not recommend a percentage for diagonal layouts, damage or future repairs.

Example: share a pack between two areas

Two areas each measure 6 ft × 4 ft. With no exclusions or allowance they need 24 ft² each. If the same flooring product covers 20 ft² per pack, calculating purchases separately gives two packs per area, or four total. Combining the 48 ft² first gives three packs. This arithmetic saving assumes usable material can be shared; it is not proof that the required cuts fit.

Common estimating mistakes

  • Rounding every room to packs before adding compatible areas.
  • Assuming two products with the same face dimensions have the same box coverage.
  • Treating an area calculation as a count of edge cuts or a tile layout.
  • Mixing dye lots, thicknesses or finishes under the same incomplete product identifier.

What this estimate leaves out

No cutting layout, grout or adhesive quantity, subfloor design, expansion gap specification or installation method is selected. The result may underestimate packages where offcuts cannot be reused. Verify coverage and layout independently before ordering.
